Marlee Johnson ended her UMES career with her first collegiate home run in her last at bat

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The UMES softball team closed out the season with a pair of losses to non-conference foe LaSalle on Sunday at Good Shepherd Field. LaSalle (8-30) won the first game 13-1 in five innings, and then took the nightcap 11-7 despite a 3-3 outing from Jenille Edwards and a home run from Marlee Johnson.

In the second game, UMES (8-32) scored three runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead, as Ashley Jones drove in one run with a base hit and Latoya Bailey brought home another one with a single to left field. Jones later crossed the plate on a passed ball to give the Lady Hawks an early three run lead.

The Explorers scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to go ahead 4-3, as Michelle Sullivan hit a grand slam and drove in four RBI. LaSalle added four more runs in the second, but UMES pulled within 8-5 in the third when Edwards singled with no outs and Jennifer Wilson tripled to send her home. Jones hit a sac fly later in the inning to plate Wilson and close the Lady Hawks within three runs of the lead.

UMES managed four hits in the sixth inning, with Johnson hitting her first collegiate home run in her last at bat for the Lady Hawks. UMES had base hits from Heather Patnode, Edwards and Bailey in the inning, but Carissa Segura sent down the next four batters, including three straight in the seventh, to end the game and seal the win for the Explorers.

Edwards finished 3-3, including two runs, while Jones went 2-3 with two RBI. Johnson also drove in two runs to go along with one run and one hit while freshman Maribeth Kulynycz went 1-3 with one run.

 

 

The Lady Hawks scored their only run in game one in the first inning, as Edwards singled up the middle to score Johnson.

LaSalle scored one run each in both the first and second innings and later scored five runs in the third inning to take a 7-1 lead. Wilson singled in the top of the fourth, but the Explorers responded with six more runs in the bottom of the inning to go up by 12 runs. Laura DeZolt limited UMES to one hit in the final inning, a single by Christina Mason, to take the 13-1 victory.

Johnson, Wilson and Mason each finished the game with a hit, while Edwards went 1-2 including one RBI.
