The UMES softball team finished its regular season by splitting a non-conference doubleheader against Norfolk State Friday, winning the opener 4-3 in dramatic fashion before falling in the nightcap 10-2. The opening game, come-from-behind victory snapped an eight-game losing skid for the Hawks (5-38, 3-17 MEAC) and gave head coach Barabara Hicks her 100th career head coaching victory. Trailing 3-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, UMES began one of its most impressive rallies of the season against Spartans reliever Angel Carrasquillo. Leslie Aitkenhead led off with a walk, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Latoya Bailey. Pinch-hitter Jen Wilson then delivered a clutch RBI double to deep center field that tied the score at 3-3. Following an infield single by Tiffany Dingle that advanced Wilson to third base, Sarah Whitfield lined a shot past first base down the right field line that plated the game-winning run. The hit made a winner out of Christina Mason (5-29), who allowed only three runs (zero earned) on four hits in seven innings.
In game two, Lenore Heron held the Hawks to two runs in five innings and Norfolk (8-32-1) easily defeated UMES. Allison Greene went 3-3 with a home run and three RBI to lead the attack, while Wilson drove in both Hawk runs with a third-inning single.
