BALTIMORE – A day after rescheduling their contests versus Morgan State University (MSU), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team lost both games to the Lady Bears, 9-1 and 10-2, respectively.

With both setbacks, the Lady Hawks have fallen to 7-37 overall (4-9 MEAC) while MSU moved to 7-19 (4-10 MEAC) on the season.

In Game One, senior Chelsea Alston (Matawan, N.J.) went 2-of-3 from the plate, including a double, whereas junior Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) and sophomore Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) also notched a hit in the loss.

After a scoreless first inning, King reached base on a single to centerfield, followed by sophomore Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.) getting on with a fielder’s choice. With runners on-base and no outs, Nash delivered a single up-the-middle to give Maryland Eastern Shore the early advantage, 1-0; however, UMES’ lead was short-lived.

In Morgan State’s second at-bat, they tallied six runs to take the lead after two innings of play, 6-1. After scoring a run in the fourth to increase their lead, 7-1, the Lady Bears tabbed two more runs, including a solo home run from MSU’s Kate Vosper, to win, 9-1.

For the Lady Bears, they collected nine runs on 11 hits, including four Morgan State players with multi-hit performances. Briana Jones led the charge, posting a hit and two RBIs in the Game One victory.

In Game Two, King batted 1-of-2 with a RBI while Alston and sophomore Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) each recorded a run scored in a losing effort.

Both clubs were scoreless after one, but Morgan State manufactured five runs in the second inning to take a commanding lead, 5-0. In the top of the third, the Lady Hawks fought back as they rallied two runs to narrow the deficit, 5-2. MSU answered, scoring three additional runs in the third to push their lead to six, 8-2. After tallying a run in the fourth, 9-2, the Lady Bears ended the contest early as they managed to score another run in the fifth to win by the final score, 10-2.

For Morgan State, Zina Constancia went a perfect 3-of-3 from the plate, including a solo shot in the fourth, while Sharaday Christina and Taylor McDougall each notched two hits in the Game Two win.
