BALTIMORE, Md. – Juniors Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.) and Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) had two hits apiece, but it was not enough as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Morgan State on Saturday afternoon at Lois T. Murray Field. The Hawks were edged 6-2 in the first game, before falling by a decision of 10-3 in the second.

UMES (0-30, 0-14 MEAC) looked as if it were going to sneak away with the victory in game one, but Morgan State (10-21, 4-10 MEAC) was able to hold down a late UMES rally. UMES fell behind by one after one inning of play, before the game went scoreless over the next two innings. The Hawks evened the match up in the fourth when James doubled to open the frame and later scored on an RBI groundout by Gurrola.

The 1-1 score did not last long as the Bears tallied two in the bottom half of the frame. After UMES was unable to score in the fifth, MSU tallied a three spot to run off to a 6-1 lead. The Hawks made it a game in the sixth after sophomore Cherokee Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.) singled and came around on a Gurrola single through the middle. The Hawk rally was soon thwarted and MSU would skate away with the win in the first.

The second game saw Morgan State take an 8-0 lead after the first three innings. UMES would make the game interesting with a solid fourth inning. James led off with a single and wasted no time in coming around after freshman Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) cleared the left field wall in the following at-bat. The homer proved to be her second of the year.

King’s heroics made the game 8-2, but UMES was not finished in the inning. Gurrola walked and stole second, before coming home on an error by MSU pitcher, Jordan Eades. The 8-3 score was as close as the maroon and gray would get, as MSU tacked on two more runs a short time later.

The Hawks were unable to close the deficit and would go on to lose their 30th straight to open the season.

The Hawks and Bears will conclude the regular season series on Sunday, April 29th at 1 p.m.
