BALTIMORE, MD - Head Coach Kirkland Hall picked up softball career win number 100 when his Lady Hawks took game two from Morgan State 6-4. Hall, currently in his final year with UMES Athletics, is completing a thirty year career.

The game, a make-up from earlier in the season, also had large implications for Morgan State (9-26, 5-9 MEAC) who were in a must win situation in game one to make the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships. They met that challenge with a five inning win, 9-1, in the final MEAC contest for both teams.

This is Hall's second stint at the softball helm. He coached from 1994-1997 and amassed a record of 88-69. This season UMES is 4-39 and 0-14 in the conference.

Hall has served UMES Athletics for 29 straight years and thirty in all, separated by a brief stint at Fayetteville State University. He has amassed over 300 wins, coaching a variety of sports including baseball, men and women's basketball and of course softball. Hall has also served as a head or assistant coach for several other sports.

On the diamond...In game two the Hawks jumped out to a four run lead in the first inning. Charlotte Ngondi led-off with a walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Latoya Bailey. UMES freshman sensation Kendra Saunders drew another walk and so did Jenille Edwards to load the bases. Then the Hawks would pick up some easy RBI. Heather Patnode walked in a run and so did Kristen Greenwood. After five straight walks the Lady Bears changed pitchers but another walk by Candace Tyler would plate the third run. After a strike out Reva Oliver would single in Patnode to give the Hawks the 4-0 lead.

Morgan State would add a run in their half of the first to make it a three run game.

UMES would add another run in the fourth when Bailey would hit a two out single and then go to third on a double by Saunders. Edwards would hit another double, this one would score Bailey and give UMES the 5-1 lead.

The Lady Bears got another run in the fifth but UMES got it back in the sixth when Bailey would again hit safely with two outs. This one was a double down the left field line. Saunders would reach on an error and another Edwards double would plate Bailey.

Morgan State added two in the seventh but it wasn't enough as UMES picked up the win. Krystal Gaud, Carolynn Howard, Nastosha Johnson and Elizabeth Fernandez would all collect a pair of hits in the game.

Bailey and Edwards would each go 2-3 for the Hawks with Bailey scoring a pair of runs and Edwards recording a pair of RBI.

In game one Morgan struck first with four runs in the opening inning. The Lady Hawks who managed only two hits on Morgan pitcher Megan Jimenez, got a run back in the top of the third inning when Ngondi scored. The host Lady Bears added a run in the fourth inning, before putting together the finishing touches with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Howard led off the inning with a double and Johnson followed with a double to drive in Howard. Fernandez, playing in her final home game as a Lady Bear later singled up the middle to score Johnson. After Gaud singled, Veronica Brown stepped in and countered with a two-run triple to right field to end the game and send the Lady Bears into the MEAC Tournament.

Ngondi and Saunders had the only hits in the game for UMES

These same two teams play tomorrow in Princess Anne, MD for the Lady Hawks senior day. UMES will honor seniors Heather Patnode, Christina Mason and Jenille Edwards beginning at 1:00 pm.
