April 29, 2007
PRINCESS ANNE, MD - - Kristen Greenwood struck out 14 batters and Kendra Saunders finished with four RBI to help the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) to a pair of victories, 7-4 and 9-1, over Coppin State University (CSU) in a non-conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Hawks Field. The wins ended a 26-game losing streak for the Lady Hawks.
UMES (4-32) took a 4-0 lead early in the first game when Brooke Downey's double plated Tiana Strother and Shakeyah Habib in the second inning. Saunders capped the four run inning for the Hawks after her left field double scored Downey and Jaleesa Lewis.
CSU scattered four runs over the next three innings to tie things up at 4-4, but the maroon and gray sealed the win in the bottom sixth after scoring three runs on two Eagle errors.
Greenwood struck out six batters in the opener while fanning eight in the nightcap. Saunders finished 2-4 with a pair of RBI while Downey and Greenwood picked up a hit each. Downey also added two RBI for good measure.
In game two, Christen Glascoe scored the only run for Coppin State after a Mia Willis single sent her across the plate in the third.
The Hawks responded with four runs of its own in the bottom third and three more in the fifth to take a 7-1 lead. Lewis' single in the sixth ended the game early for UMES when her hit drove in Strother and Shadawn Paige for a pair of RBI.
Lewis and Saunders each went 1-4 with two RBI while Habib and Brittany Anderson picked up two runs apiece for the Hawks.
The Lady Hawks will return to action on Wednesday, May 3 when they face Delaware State in a non-doubleheader at 5:00pm in Dover.
