PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The Morgan State softball team edged UMES in a pair of non-conference match-ups Saturday, winning 4-2 and 7-6 on Senior Day at Hawks Field. Today's contests marked the final appearance for one UMES senior, Kristen Greenwood (Bel Air, Md./Catawba College). In the opener, MSU got on board early when Chanel Lee's right field single sent Dominisha Britton across the plate in the first inning. The maroon and gray tied the score at 1-1 when Jaleesa Lewis scored on a fielding error by Nastosha Johnson the bottom of the inning. Morgan State (12-21) added one run in the third before a run by Kendra Saunders tied things at 2-2. Ashley Vasquez hit a two-run homer in the fifth to put the Bears up by a pair of runs and seal the win. Greenwood (4-19) took the loss for the Hawks while Carolynn Howard picked up the win for MSU and improved to 7-11. The Lady Bears jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second decision before Lewis and Ashley Taylor each scored unearned runs for the Hawks in the third. Megan Jimenez scored a run for MSU in the fifth and gave the Bears a 7-3 advantage.
The maroon and gray added three runs in the bottom fifth to get within a run of the lead at 7-6. Mishayla Truttman had a run-scoring single and Brooke Downey, Taylor and Lewis each crossed the plate for the Hawks. Truttman picked up the game two loss and falls to 0-17 while Porsche Boddicker earned the win. UMES (4-36) has completed its regular season and will look forward to next year after losing just one letterwinner in the Lady Hawks' lone senior, Greenwood. "It's been a great year and we played tough all season," Head Coach Sam Douglas said. "We had a lot of support from parents and fans and look forward to more improvement next year." Kristen Greenwood
