May 6, 2012
Princess Anne, Md. -- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore lost its last two games of the 2012 season Sunday. UMES scored one run in its doubleheader versus Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference leading Delaware State, but lost to the Hornets 8-0, 10-1.
Morgan King went 2-of-4 (.500) on the day, hitting doubles in both games of the Hawks doubleheader with Delaware State. King sparked the UMES offense with her first double in the second inning of game one and down by two runs. In the field, King had a total of five putouts for the Hawks, making a catch in foul territory to give the Hornets its second out, and keep a runner from advancing.
The Hawks posted five hits in game two. Kirsten Carrington, Kristen Lee, Cy'Anna Scott, Carmen Gurrola and King each registered hits for UMES. Scott scored the Hawks only run of game two. Scott singled in the bottom of the fifth to reach base. Lee singled to advance Scott, followed by Carrington getting her second hit of the season to move both Lee and Scott into scoring positions.
With Shaniqa Roane at the plate, Delaware State's Stephanie Sarris would walk Roane with the bases full. Scott would reach home following the walk.
The Hawks defense forced Delaware State to leave 15 runners on base, while UMES posted 36 putouts. King, Carmen Gurrola and Jasmine James led UMES in batting average. King had a team's best .330, while Gurrola and James finished with a .316 and .314, respectively. The three led the Hawks in homeruns. King had two, with Gurrola and James each had one.
