PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Lady Hawks swept their doubleheader against the Cougars of Frederick Community College (CC), 12-5 and 11-0, respectively. The team scored early in both contests and never looked back as the pitching staff held the Cougars to 10 hits combined in the two games. Sophomore Vanessa Gomez led the Hawk attack while Abria Tinsley set the tone for the pitching staff.
In the first game, after taking an early 2-0 lead, the Lady Hawks would score five runs in the second led by back-to-back singles from Carmen Frazier and Cherokee Williams to put runners on first and second. One batter later, Gomez hits to left centerfield to bring Frazier and Williams around to score and Gomez ended up with a triple in the process. In the same inning, the Lady Hawks had bases loaded with two outs and Trenece Nash hits a single to bring home two more runs to extend the lead, 6-0. After two innings, the score was 7-0 after Morgan King scored on an error. After taking a commanding 8-0 lead, the Cougars would make a rally in the fourth inning by scoring three runs to cut the lead to five, 8-3, but the Lady Hawks would answer in the fifth and sixth innings by score two runs in each inning to put the game away. The Cougars would score two more runs to make the final score, 12-5.
Gomez led the Hawk attack by going 3-3 including four Runs-Batted-Ins (RBIs), two scored runs, and a triple. The pitching staff led by Tinsley gave up seven hits and five runs (two earned). Tinsley started the game and pitched two no-hit innings including no runs, one walk, and struck out five of the seven batters she faced.
In the second game, the Hawks again jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first inning and gradually scored runs in the third and fourth innings to extend the lead, 5-0. In the fifth inning with a runner in scoring position, Nash would deliver by hitting a single through the left side of the infield bringing King home to score, 6-0. In the same inning with bases loaded and no outs, Williams would hit a single through the right side and scoring two more runs, 8-0. The Lady Hawks would add three more runs in the inning to make the final score, 11-0.
Four hawks would have multi-hits in the second game led by Williams and Chelsea Alston. Williams and Alston each had two hits along with two RBIs. Alston also hit a triple in the fourth inning, which she later scored after Gomez's RBI-single. The pitching staff demonstrated another strong performance by allowing only three hits and no runs. Tinsley, Caitlin McDaniel, and Kaitlyn Hitch pitched two innings and allowed one hit each in the win.
