PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Tomorrow (02/21), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team returns to the diamond as they head down south to Greensboro, N.C. to compete in the North Carolina A&T Tournament, hosted by conference rival North Carolina A&T State University (NCAT).

The Lady Hawks went winless as they participated in the Charleston Southern Tournament; located in Charleston, S.C. UMES was unable to find any offensive rhythm as they were held to only two runs in the entire three-day tournament.

TOP PERFORMERS

Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) was the top performer for the Lady Hawks in the tournament, posting a .462 batting average (6-of-13), including a homer versus Charleston Southern University (CSU). Other notable Hawk performance included Emily Diseroad (Manchester Valley, Md.) going 3-of-10 (.300) while driving in a RBI.

MATCHUP PREVIEWS

Tomorrow (02/21), UMES opens the tournament against Saint Francis (Pa.) University, a member of the Northeast Conference (NEC). First-pitch is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. (EST) The Red Flash begin their 2014 campaign versus the Lady Hawks as they finished their 2013 season 25-30 overall (6-14 NEC) and ninth in the conference. This season, Saint Francis is predicted to finish seventh in the NEC, led by senior Chelsy Cosentino. In 2013, Cosentino posted a .354 batting average with four home runs and 29 RBIs.

Later that day (02/21), Maryland Eastern Shore takes on Rider University, a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), to wrap-up day one. Game-time is set for 10:30 a.m. (EST) Similar to the Red Flash; the Broncos open their season against UMES after an 8-41 (3-13 MAAC) 2013 campaign. Prior to the season, Rider was predicted to finish tenth in the conference, guided by senior Kehli Washington. Washington, a 2014 MAAC Preseason Team selection, started all 49 games for the Broncos while leading the team in batting average (.346) and stolen bases (24). Two days later (02/23), UMES and Rider meet on the final day of the tournament. First-pitch is 10:30 a.m. (EST)


 

 

On day two (02/22), the Lady Hawks face NCAT as the lone opponent on the day. First-pitch is booked for 10:30 a.m. (EST) The Lady Aggies come into the tournament 2-2 overall after competing in the Alabama State Tournament, located in Montgomery, Ala. The team knocked off host team, Alabama State University, and Gardner-Webb University. This season, North Carolina A&T is led by seniors Sabrina Edmonds, Tranea Jones, and Detavia Kenan. All three Lady Aggies averaged over .300 during the 2013 campaign and look to make a contribution this season.

On the final day (02/23), UMES meets their second conference foe of the tournament, Morgan State University (MSU), before a re-match with Rider. Game-time versus the Lady Bears is slated for 8:30 a.m. (EST) MSU enters the tournament 1-3 on the season with their lone victory over Thomas University, 14-12, in extra innings. This season, the Lady Bears are led by sophomore Kimberly Fontaine, a Granada Hills, Calif.-native. Last season, Fontaine recorded a .306 batting average while driving in 15 runs.
