LADY HAWKS GROUNDED BY ST. FRANCIS IN N.C. A&T TOURNEY OPENER
Feb. 24, 2013
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Senior Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.) continued her five-game hitting streak to open the season, but it was not enough as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team was downed by St. Francis (Pa.) University, 11-4, on Sunday afternoon. The result was the first for the women in the North Carolina A&T Tournament, which was moved back a day due to inclement weather.
UMES (3-2) had six different players register hits in the contest with senior Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.), sophomore Carmen Frazier (Montgomery Village, Md.) and freshman Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) picking up one hit and one RBI. Nash doubled for the third consecutive game, while Gurrola went the complete-game effort on the hill with six strikeouts.
The Lady Hawks and St. Francis (1-3) were locked up in a tight affair to open the game. After going quietly through the first two innings, UMES exploded with a pair of runs in the third to make the score 4-2. UMES saw freshman Emily Diseroad (Manchester, Md.) and junior Cherokee Williams (Bowie, Md.) reached base safely, before the pair came home on a drive to right by junior Chelsea Alston (Matawan, N.J.) and a sacrifice fly by Gurrola.
St. Francis responded with a lone run in the bottom half of the inning, but UMES went on to score the next two runs with solo tallies in the fourth and fifth. With the Lady Hawks' deficit at one, St. Francis put up a five-spot in the bottom of fifth to substantially move its advantage. The runs proved to be too much as UMES did not have an answer the rest of the way.
St. Francis had 16 hits in the game with six players having multi-hit performances.
The Lady Hawks' had their nightcap against North Carolina A&T suspended in the fourth inning due to darkness. The play between the two teams will resume tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. The Lady Hawks are also scheduled to compete in two other matches on Monday with UMES playing at 10 a.m., and again at 2 p.m.
