UMES SOFTBALL HEADS TO COASTAL CAROLINA INVITATIONAL

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Tomorrow (02/28), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team heads down south to compete in the Coastal Carolina Invitational, located in Conway, S.C. The three-day tournament (02/28-03/01) features Marshall University, Samford University, St. Peter's University, and the host team, Coastal Carolina University.
Last weekend (02/21-02/23), Maryland Eastern Shore went 2-2 at the North Carolina A&T Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. The team defeated Rider University twice during the three-day span, but fell to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rivals, Morgan State University and North Carolina A&T State University.
During that span, junior Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) had the best performance among the Lady Hawks as she went 7-of-13 (.538) with 13 RBIs, eight runs, and two homers at the North Carolina A&T Tournament. Other notable Hawk performances included Emily Diseroad (Manchester Valley, Md.), Carmen Frazier (Montgomery Village, Md.), Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.), and Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.).
Tomorrow, the Lady Hawks open the tournament versus Marshall University. First-pitch is set for noon (EST). The Herd enters the tournament 2-8 overall with victories over Loyola-Chicago and Delaware. Shaelynn Braxton, a Woodbridge, Va.-native, is second on the team in batting average (.424) while leading the team in slugging percentage (.879), RBIs (11), and home runs (4). Kaelynn Greene, a 2013 C-USA First Team All-Conference Team selection, leads the team in batting average (.444).
On the same day (02/28), UMES takes on Coastal Carolina University to wrap-up day one of the tournament. Game-time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. (EST) Two days later (03/02), these two clubs will meet on the final day of the tournament. First-pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m. (EST) This season, the Chanticleers comes in 6-3 on the season with a 5-1 home record. Coastal Carolina is led by Ashley Bagwell, Kory Hayden, and 2013 Big South Pitcher of the Year, Kiana Quolas.
The next day (03/01), Maryland Eastern Shore opens the day against Samford University. Game-time is booked for 4:30 p.m. (EST) Entering tomorrow, the Bulldogs have amassed a 12-3 overall record, including a three-game winning streak. Megan Dowdy, a 2013 Southern Conference All-Freshman Team selection, leads Samford in multiple categories, including batting average (.365), hits (19), and stolen bases (11).
Later on that Saturday, the Lady Hawks conclude day two versus the Peacock of St. Peter's University. First-pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. (EST) St. Peter's opens its 2014 campaign versus Coastal Carolina before squaring off against UMES. The team finished 9-45 overall (2-14 MAAC) a year ago, led by Lee Harrison. Last season, Harrison posted a .312 batting average while hitting nine homers and driving in 24 RBIs.
On Mar. 7th, the Lady Hawks travel to Catonsville, Md. to take on in-state rival, Maryland Baltimore-County, in a doubleheader. Game-times are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. (EST), respectively.
Two days later (03/09), Maryland Eastern Shore opens its home opener versus the Retrievers in a doubleheader. First-pitch is slated for noon and 2:30 p.m. (EST), respectively.
