PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Today (04/02), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team heads to Newark, Del. to take on the University of Delaware (UD) at Delaware Softball Diamond in a non-conference doubleheader. First-pitches are slated for 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. (EST), respectively.

Yesterday (04/01), UMES fell to Coppin State University (CSU) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader at Coppin State Softball Complex, 4-0 and 11-3, respectively.

BIG DAY BY BENITEZ NOT ENOUGH IN UMES LOSS TO DELAWARE

Despite the strong pitching performance in Game One from sophomore Abria Tinsley (Sewell, N.J.), Maryland Eastern Shore could not find any offensive rhythm as they lost by the final score, 4-0.

In Game Two, the Lady Hawks took a quick lead, 1-0, but Coppin State answered with seven first-inning runs to take a commanding lead, 7-1. UMES fought back and trimmed the deficit, 8-3, but the Eagles took the second game, 11-3.

TOP PERFORMERS

UMES registered five hits in Game One, led by sophomore Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) going 3-of-4 from the plate. Fellow sophomore Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) and freshman Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also recorded a hit in the Game One loss.

In Game Two, senior Chelsea Alston (Matawan, N.J.) went a perfect 2-for-2 inside the batter’s box, including a double, while scoring twice. Gomez drove in two RBIs while freshman Alexis Hudson (Laurel, Del.) batted 1-of-2 and a run scored.

MATCHUP PREVIEW

Enter today’s game; the Blue Hens come in 10-16 overall, including a split on the road versus conference rival, University of North Carolina-Wilmington (UNCW), in their last outing. This season, four Delaware players are hitting over .300, led by freshman Giovanna Kolofer. In 18 games (15 starts), the reigning Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Rookie of the Week leads the team in average (.386) along with stolen bases (7). Other notable Blue Hen includes junior Jessica Grisler and freshmen Danielle Wissinger and Carolyn Szymanski, who won the CAA Rookie of the Week on Mar. 4th.

For Maryland Eastern Shore, they enter 6-26 overall and look to get back on track before resuming conference play this weekend. Junior Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) guides the Hawk attack as she leads the team in batting average (.354), hits (34), and slugging percentage (.552). Currently, sophomore Emily Diseroad (Manchester Valley, Md.) is second on the team in batting average (.297) while Alston leads the team in stolen bases (13).

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

This weekend (04/05-04/06), the Lady Hawks return home to continue conference play against Norfolk State University (NSU) at Lady Hawks Field. Saturday’s doubleheader is booked for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. (EST), respectively; whereas Sunday’s single seven-inning contest takes place at noon (EST).
