April 25, 2014
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – This weekend (04/26-04/27), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team heads to Baltimore to face the Lady Bears of Morgan State University (MSU) in a crucial three-game series. Saturday’s doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m. (EST) while Sunday’s single seven-inning game takes place at noon (EST).
In Game One, George Mason held Maryland Eastern Shore to three hits. Seniors Chelsea Alston (Matawan, N.J.) and Cherokee Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and sophomore Emily Diseroad (Manchester Valley, Md.) each registered a hit in defeat.
In Game Two, UMES could not find any offensive rhythm as they were contained to only two hits. Sophomores Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) and Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) were the only Lady Hawks to collect hits in the loss.
Entering this weekend’s showdown, the Lady Bears come in 5-19 overall (2-10 MEAC) and looking to make a late run for a chance to enter the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament, which begins May 5th at Ormond Beach, Fla. This season, MSU is led by Claudette Smith, Shareday Christina, and Zina Constancia. The trio spearheads the Bears attack as they have accounted for 41 runs, 76 hits, and 40 RBIs this season.
For the Lady Hawks, Diseroad and junior Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) have guided UMES to a 7-35 record (4-7 MEAC). King, a 2013-14 MEAC Preseason All-Conference selection, paces the Hawk attack as she has collected 36 hits, 22 RBIs, and four homers this season. Diseroad has participated in 39 contests (38 starts) while posting a .303 batting average, .364 slugging percentage, and .405 on-base percentage. Currently, Maryland Eastern Shore holds the fifth spot in the standings, trailing in-state rival Coppin State University (CSU) for the final playoff spot.
Next weekend (05/03-05/04), Maryland Eastern Shore wraps-up the regular-season against Delaware State University (DSU) at Lady Hawks Field on Senior Day. Saturday’s doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. (EST), respectively; while Sunday’s single seven-inning contest begins at noon (EST).
