VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Just less than a week after completing their season with double the amount of wins from last year, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore's (UMES) Kendra Saunders (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada/Streetsville Secondary School) was named a 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Second Team member as announced by the league on Wednesday at their annual pre-tournament banquet.

Saunders led the Lady Hawks to a 10-34 overall record, their best since the 2003 campaign, and was amongst the team leaders in six different offensive categories, including batting average (.366), runs (27), homeruns (5), RBI (23), slugging percentage (.598), and on-base percentage (.453), despite playing in only 31 games due to a season-ending shoulder injury against Norfolk State on April 16.

In addition, Saunders had the most multiple hit (11) and RBI (8) games by a Lady Hawk this season. She also set career-highs in five areas and was on pace to break several more records before being sidelined with the injury.

Unquestionably, the team's leader, Saunders helped UMES take second place at the Hampton Lady Pirates Classic with a 6-5 win over conference foe Morgan State.

UMES will look to improve upon their 3-12 MEAC finish, the team's first conference wins in two seasons, as Saunders and all 16 Lady Hawks return for another year.
