CHARLISE CASTRO NAMED MID-EASTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
May 11, 2011
NORFOLK, Va. -- The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference has announced that University of Maryland Eastern Shore catcher Charlise Castro has been named Rookie of the Year.
Castro (Saugerties, N.Y.) was also named to the 1st-Team All-MEAC as a catcher, one of only two freshmen named to the conference's top roster. She is the first Hawk to receive 1st-Team honors since 2009 when Kendra Saunders and Mishayla Truttman were named to that team.
In her freshman season, Castro was the strongest power hitter in the conference, leading the MEAC in home runs with 13, slugging percentage with .801, more than 150 points than the second place player, and 111 total bases.
This season for the Hawks she started all 47 games, hitting .409 with 12 doubles, 42 runs batted in, 18 walks, four sacrifice flies and had an on-base percentage of .472, all leading the team. She also stole seven bases in as many attempts.
Castro was named MEAC Rookie of the Week for the period ending March 28th after hitting five home runs in five games, including a pair in a win against North Carolina A&T, with seven RBI.
