PRINCESS ANNE, MD. – Last week was fill with exciting news including Petra Jerabkova (volleyball) and Khalil Rmidi (Men’s XC) being named UMES Athletes of the Week, multiple teams releasing their 2013-14 schedule, volleyball weekend results, and more.

Let’s get started:

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Last week, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Men’s Basketball team released their 2013-14 schedule featuring 29 regular-season contests including 13 of those contests being held at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

On Nov. 1st, the men’s basketball team will open the season with a maroon & gray scrimmage game. Eight days later (Nov. 9th), the squad will hit the road to the Big Apple (New York City) to face Columbia University from the Ivy League.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The women’s basketball team announced their 2013-14 schedule where the Lady Hawks will play 12 non-conference games including four home contests. The Lady Hawks will face 12 opponents from 11 different conferences including teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and Big 12 Conference.

On Nov. 8th, the team will tip-off the new season at home against the University of South Carolina-Upstate (USC-Upstate), then hit the road for three games beginning in our National’s Capital (Washington, D.C.) against American University.

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Freshman Khalil Rmidi (Malaga, Spain) was one of two UMES student-athletes named the Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC)UMES Athletes of the Week along with Petra Jerabkova (volleyball). This award is Rmidi Kinini’s first award of his collegiate career at UMES. On Sept. 7th, Rmidi Knini finished as UMES top-runner for the UMES Lid-Lifter with 16:42:07, landing him an eighth-place finish. His efforts guided the men to a second-place finish at the event.

SOFTBALL

On Sept. 12th, UMES softball team released their 2013 fall ball schedule featuring four doubleheaders against Frederick Community College (CC), Delaware Technical CC-Stanton, Delaware Technical-Georgetown, and Chesapeake CC. All eight contests will be held at Hawks Field.

One day later (Sept. 13th), the Lady Hawks announced their 2014 spring schedule featuring three tournaments to start the season. The team is scheduled to play 45 games including 11 games held at Hawks Field. The Lady Hawks begin their 2014 campaign in Charleston, SC where they will compete in the Charles Southern University Tournament.

VOLLEYBALL

Petra Jerabkova (Czech Republic) was one of two athletes named the PRMC UMES Athletes of the Week along with Khalil Rmidi (Men’s XC). This award marks Jerabkova’s first award of her collegiate career at UMES. Jerabkova was also named Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Week in her first collegiate outing as well.

Last week, Jerabkova and Senior Jingqiao Li (Beijing, China) were named to the Sacred Heart University Hampton Inn All-Tournament team for their performance in Fairfield, CT. Jerabkova posted 24 kills, 41 assists, and 32 digs while being one dig shy of her first-career triple-double in a match versus Manhattan. Li finished the tournament with a career-high 28 digs against Manhattan while accumulating 66 digs total.

This past weekend, the Lady Hawks competed in the Norfolk State University (NSU) Spartan Invite where they picked up their first victory of the season against conference foe, Bethune-Cookman. The team dropped the first match of the tournament to the University of North Carolina-Charlotte (UNC-Charlotte), 3-0. Jerabkova lead the way for the Lady Hawks with eight kills and 14 assists. The next day, the team grabbed its first win of the season over Bethune-Cookman, 3-0. Sophomore Ashley Smith (Huntley, IL) had a dozen (12) kills and hit an impressive .400 in the win. In the nightcap, the Lady Hawks were defeated by NSU, 3-0, in the final match of the tournament. Jerabkova and Haley Robinson (Honolulu, HI) both had five kills each and Lauren Berry (Bloomington, IL) added four kills.

After the conclusion of the tournament, Jerabkova and Robinson earned NSU All-Tournament Team recognition. In the tournament, Jerabkova posted 18 kills, 44 assists, two aces, 17 digs, and three blocks while Robinson notched 19 kills, nine blocks, six digs, one ace, and two assists.

This weekend (Sept. 20-21), the volleyball team travels to Buffalo, NY to participate in the Blue & White Classic to face Ohio State, Buffalo, and Valparaiso.

GENERAL

Last week, the UMES Athletics Department showed its support for the town of Princess Anne by participating in Community Service Day. UMES coaches and student-athletes worked to clean and revitalize areas of Downtown Princess Anne. Coaches and student-athletes from sports, such as baseball, men’s & women’s basketball, golf, and softball began cleaning and removing debris from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Several UMES athletic teams will participate in community service activities as a team and part of athletics. Additionally, the UMES Athletics Department participates in the Wicomico County Relay For Life event at Perdue Stadium every year. The event will be held on Friday, September 27th.
