PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team split their doubleheader with Delaware Technical Community College (Del Tech CC)-Georgetown. The Lady Hawks took game one, 7-2, but fell in game two, 9-3. New Jersey natives Chelsea Alston (Matawan) and Vanessa Gomez (Belleville) led the Hawk attack.

In game one, both teams were scoreless after three innings until the Lady Hawks’ bats exploded for five runs in the fourth inning. With one out and bases loaded, Emily Diseroad (Manchester, MD) hit a single to right field to drive in Trenece Nash (Decatur, GA) and Morgan King (Danville, IL) to take a 2-0 lead. One batter later, Cherokee Williams (Upper Marlboro, MD) hits a single to centerfield, driving home Ciara Schnyder (Arcadia, CA) to make the score 3-0. The Lady Hawks would score two more runs to take a commanding 5-0 lead after four innings. In the sixth inning, Del Tech would cut into the Hawk lead by scoring two runs, 5-2. The Lady Hawks would answer with two runs of their own to increase the lead back to five runs, 7-2, which would be the final score.

Gomez and Alston led the Hawk attack in game one. Gomez went 2-4 along with a stolen base and RBI. Alston would hit 2-4 including a triple in the sixth inning. Alston also added a RBI in the win. Diseroad had the one clutch hit in the game along with two RBIs and a run scored. Abria Tinsley (Sewell, NJ) set the tone for the pitching staff in game one. Tinsley pitched four innings allowed no runs on three hits while striking out three Del Tech batters.

In game two, Del Tech would jump out to an early 1-0 lead after one inning. In the second inning, Del Tech would score five runs to take a commanding, 6-0, lead. The Lady Hawks would battle back by scoring one run in the third and fourth innings each, 6-2. Del Tech would respond by scoring two runs in the fifth inning to extend the lead back to six runs, 8-2. The Lady Hawks scored another run in the sixth inning, but Del Tech would answer with a run of their own in the seventh inning. Del Tech would win game two, 9-3, to split the doubleheader with the Lady Hawks.

King and Nash both had two hits in the game. King went 2-4 while Nash batted 2-3, including a double in the second inning. Gomez, Williams, and Alston each had a RBI in the loss.

The Lady Hawks are 5-1 overall in the fall ball season. UMES wraps up the fall ball season with Chesapeake CC tomorrow (Oct. 6th). First pitch is 1:00 p.m.
