HAWK SOFTBALL RELEASES 2012-13 SCHEDULE

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team released its regular season schedule for the 2012-13 season, it was announced today. The schedule features over 50 games with 19 double-headers and three tournaments. The women will play 23 games at Hawk Field, 10 of which are opponents from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
The women open the year with a pair of doubleheaders at Hawk Field against St. Peter’s on February 9-10. The team will then travel to Greensboro, N.C., to compete in the North Carolina A&T Tournament. UMES is slated to face St. Francis (N.Y.) and Canisius on February 22, before ending the event with games against Manhattan and North Carolina A&T the following day.
UMES will take a week off before it hits the road for Irondale, Ala., to compete in the Tiny Laster Tournament. UMES plays Langston on the first day of March and will conclude the event with games against Tennessee State, Alabama A&M and Mississippi Valley State. UMES’ participation in the tournament is their third appearance in the event over the past four years.
The Hawks return home to face last season’s MEAC North Division regular season champion, Delaware State, for a double-dip on March 6 in Princess Anne. Following the game, UMES takes the road for seven days, beginning with action in the Hampton University Tournament. The Hawks meet Siena on March 8, before two contests against Central Connecticut and Canisius on March 9. UMES concludes the event with a game against Delaware on March 10.
The women host North Carolina Central in a doubleheader on March 13, before they make their annual spring break trip south. UMES begins the trip with three contests at 2012 MEAC South Division regular season champion, Savannah State, and two in Orangeburg, S.C., against South Carolina State. The maroon and gray then go on to play two at Division II foe, Virginia Union, on March 20 and then open up MEAC play with three at Howard on March 23-24. Last season, Virginia Union and Howard won just 11 games apiece.
UMES returns home for a doubleheader against Siena on March 27, before engaging with three games against last season’s NCAA triples champion, Coppin State, from March 27-29. UMES stays in conference with three games at Norfolk State to begin April and then return to Hawk Field for a pair against Penn State – Hazelton on April 10.
The women continue on with their season with two games at George Mason on April 17, but will return home for three against MEAC rival, Hampton, on April 20-21. Following a twin bill at Goldey-Beacom, UMES returns home for five games to conclude May. The team is scheduled for three against Morgan State and two more against Central Connecticut in a four-day span. The women round out play in the regular season with three contests at Delaware State from May 4-5.
The MEAC Softball Championships are once again scheduled to take place in Ormond Beach, Fla., and the Hawks will make the trek to the Sunshine State on May 9. The women will continue action in the event until May 11.
