RICHMOND, Va. -- A back and forth contest against Virginia Union resulted in a win for the Hawks 5-4 to begin the 2011 campaign. UMES won two of three doubles matches after splitting the six singles matches 3-3. All nine matches were worth one point each.

Paula Vilas (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) had a strong day for the Hawks, nearly sweeping her singles match with Shacoya Patrick 6-1, 6-0, then partnering with Solana McMillan (Teaneck, N.J.) to defeat the doubles team of Kiara Miller and April George 8-6 in pro set play. McMillan fell in a close match against Miller in singles play 6-7 (2), 6-7 (2).

Arshell Jackson (Easton, Md.) started her Hawks career with a strong singles win against DeJamine Byrson 6-2, 7-6 (2), followed by a tough doubles victory with Alisia Belt (Suitland, Md.) over Bryson and LaQuacious Moore 8-6. Belt played tough but fell to Moore 1-6, 1-6 in singles action.

The doubles team of Brittany Coppock (Glen Burnie, Md.) and Shamara McKenzie (Neptune, N.J.) were tied with the VUU team of Shacoya Patrick and Tenise Lampley at seven games, but the Panthers pulled out a 9-7 win in the match. Coppock won a fierce singles match with April George 7-6 (1), 6-4, while McKenzie fell to Lampley 3-6, 1-6.

The Hawks will head to Sumter, South Carolina to play in the MEAC Roundup during the weekend.
