HAWKS VICTORIOUS! WOMEN'S TENNIS WINS FIRST MATCH OF THE YEAR AT WESLEY
March 29, 2012
DOVER, Del. - It was a banner day for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's tennis team on Wednesday, as the team posted their first victory of the year with a 7-0 victory at Wesley College. The win saw several Hawks notch their first victories of the season and it proved to be the first coaching victory of Dr. James Heimdal's career at UMES. The men also played well, but fell 5-2 to the Wolverines.
"The girls dominated play," said Heimdal. "It was good to win this match, especially after the tough spring break we had. I'm just really happy right now. Everyone is happy for each other."
UMES (1-10) opened the day with three straight wins in doubles play. Senior Solana McMillan (Teaneck, N.J.) and junior Shamara McKenzie (Neptune, N.J.) won 8-2 at No.1 doubles, before sophomores Arshelle Jackson (Easton, Md.) and Enjoli Simmons (Baltimore, Md.) posted an 8-1 victory at second doubles. Senior Anna Katenta (Germantown, Md.) and junior Raveena Sharma (Fruitland, Md.) finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-5 victory at No. 3.
After the Hawks' victories in doubles, it began to rain in the Dover area and play was temporarily interrupted. The inclement weather featured a harsh rain storm and several strikes of lightning were seen nearby. The weather eventually stopped and play was resumed.
McMillan posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles to tally her second win of the year, while McKenzie was victorious at No. 2. The Hawks would continue to pile on the wins, as Jackson won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 and Simmons won 6-1, 6-0 at fourth singles. Katenta won at No. 5 and Sharma capped the sweep with a 6-0 win at No. 6.
"I'm thankful to be a part of the team," said Heimdal. "This is what I did it for. Every part of the match was great, but it was special watching girls like Raveena Sharma play so well. It's amazing to see how far she has come since she began earlier in the year."
Johnson posted his first victory of the year, 6-4, 6-0, with a victory over Chris Maximo at No. 1 singles, before Costica claimed an 8-1 victory at No. 2. Sophomore Wirlen Elame posted three points in the third spot, while sophomore Wayne Heath and freshman Christopher Charles combined to win five games the rest of the way in singles play.
Despite the loss, the men's team was involved in several matches that were close until the very end. The victory for the women should provide confidence to a team that has continually improved throughout the year.
"I'm hoping we build off this momentum," said Heimdal. "The team played great and I think they were all tired of losing. I think we have a good chance of duplicating this effort over the next few weeks."
The women return to action with two matches on Saturday, March 30. The Hawks open up play with an 11 a.m., match at home against Delaware State, before hosting Savannah State at 4 p.m. The men and women will both be in action on Sunday, April 1, when the Hawks travel to Loyola for a 1 p.m., start.
