April 4, 2013
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore women’s tennis team is still in search of its first victory this season after the Lady Hawks fell in a pair of matches on Tuesday at the Hawks Tennis Courts. The women opened with a 4-0 loss to Coppin State, before they concluded by being on the wrong side of a 5-0 decision to Norfolk State.
UMES (0-5) collected four points in the opener against Coppin State (2-11). Freshman Jasmine Jennings (Halifax, Va.) was the top women’s performer after she collected two points at No. 2 singles. Senior Kenesha Abrams (Brooklyn, N.Y.) posted a point to fall 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, while senior Valentina Collazos (Cali, Colombia) fell by a decision of 8-1 at No. 4. UMES was blanked at the top-single portion as freshman Reine Fowajuh (Wilmington, Del.) lost by consecutive 6-0 decisions.
The match against Norfolk State (9-7) proved to be quite one-sided. The Lady Spartans ran away with the 5-0 victory after sweeping both singles and doubles play. UMES was unable to notch a point at any of the four singles matches, as well as both of those in the doubles portion.
The Hawks will stay at home for their next contest when they host Hampton on Saturday, April 6 at 1 p.m. The match is the first of two for UMES on the weekend as the women will also square off with Wesley on Sunday, April 7 at noon.
