WOMEN'S TENNIS EDGED IN SEASON FINALE BY BOWIE STATE, 6-3
April 12, 2012
BOWIE, Md. – Senior Solana McMillan (Teaneck, N.J.) saved the best for last on Wednesday afternoon as she was victorious in both singles and doubles play, but it was not enough, as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women’s tennis team concluded its season with a 6-3 loss at Bowie State. The two wins provided McMillan with six on the season, as she concludes her Hawk career with 25 victories altogether.
"It was a wonderful day to see the girls give 100%," said Heimdal. "The match was a major improvement and was a testimony to the hard work they have given over the past three months. We ended on a real high note and the girls can all feel good about the way they ended the year."
UMES (1-16) began with an 8-1 victory at top doubles over Bowie State (4-13). McMillan teamed up with junior Shamara McKenzie (Neptune, N.J.) for the win, before the Hawks were upended in the other two doubles matches.
The Hawks saw McMillan claim a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles over Iyabode Sodipo to begin the singles portion. McKenzie fell just short of a win at No. 2, where she took the match to three sets before falling, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore Arshelle Jackson (Easton, Md.) notched a huge victory at No. 3 with a 7-5, 6-3 decision.
Simmons continued the Hawks’ strong play at fourth singles with a three-set loss, before senior Anna Katenta (Germantown, Md.) and junior Raveena Sharma (Fruitland, Md.) won 13 games combined to round out play.
The match proved to be the final collegiate match for McMillan, Katenta, Paula Vilas (Santo Domingo, Dom. Republic) and Alisia Belt (Suitland, Md.). The Hawks look to return four letter winners for the 2012-13 season.
