Salisbury, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) sent eight singles players four doubles teams to the 27th Annual Hecht's Tournament held over the weekend at Salisbury University. Doubles were where the Lady Hawks had the biggest impact. Newcomers Nadia Flores and Aissatau Ba topped Holly Hagar and Julie Harper 6-2, 6-4 after advancing via bye. That win advanced them to the semi-finals where they knocked off the team of Littleton and Wendell 6-3, 6-2. In the final match doubles champions and #1 seed Erika Mitry and Jennifer Rosier defeated Ba and Flores, 6-2, 6-3. Three of the four teams entered advanced to the second round via bye. In the first round, Fatoumata Ba and Haaveshe Sawyer were eliminated by Hager and Harper 6-2, 6-4. In the second round Paige Chapman and Tonaio Swangin were defeated by Mitry and Rosier 6-0, 6-0; Kyndall Chapman and Yamada Dorsey were downed by the team of Ashley Littleon and Robyn S. Wendell 6-1. 6-0. On the singles side seven of the eight competitors advanced to the second round. Fatoumata Ba, Swangin, Flores, Chapman, Dorsey and Obeni Okojie all advanced via a bye. Aissatau Ba had to advance the hard way knocking off Jennifer Abernathy 6-1, 6-1 but fell in the second round to Rosier 6-1, 6-2. Okojie fell to Hager 6-0, 6-0, Dorsey fell to Samantha Smiles 6-0, retired, Chapman fell to Anna Marie E. Kable 6-0, 6-0, Flores was defeated by Cindy Robinson 6-0, 6-0, Swangin fell to Wendell 6-0, 6-0 and Fatoumata Ba was eliminated by Mitry 6-1,. 6-0. In first round action Chapman was defeated by Littleton 6-2, 6-3.
Head Coach Doug Wright was proud of the effort. "We struggled last season and now we believe we have some young ladies that can play with the MEAC competition. This event helped show that. I think that this tournament helped prepare us for our first match against MEAC rival Delaware State in Dover, Del. on October 2, 2005," Wright said. |
