VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men's and women's tennis teams have earned their highest ever pre-season prediction for the 2010 year, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced earlier this week. The Hawks and Lady Hawks were both predicted to finish fifth in the northern division.

The pre-season poll, voted on by the league's head tennis coaches and sports information directors have the fighting hawks with 112 votes and the Lady Hawks with 117. UMES topped Coppin State in both polls who received two and three less points respectively. This is the highest ranking UMES has received in the pre-season poll since the league began conducting them.

South Carolina State and Hampton were predicted to win the southern and northern division respectively for both the men and women. The Bulldogs received 234 points on the women's side and 222 on the men's. Hampton earned 249 points for their women's squad while the men garnered 237. Florida A&M in the south and Howard in the north were also predicted to be second in both polls.

On the women's side, Delaware State and Morgan State round out the third and fourth spots while it is reversed on the men's side.

South Carolina State won the men's and women's titles in 2009.

Conference play begins on March 4, 2009 in the league with UMES starting one day later, taking on North Carolina A&T and Savannah State on the women's side while the men also face the SSU Tigers. The play continues through the 7th at the un-official MEAC Round-Up, a meeting between the several of the northern and southern conference schools.
