HAROLD FOWLER NAMED INTERIM TENNIS COACH
March 29, 2010
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - University of Maryland Eastern Shore tennis head coach Dylan Vickers has resigned from his post effective immediately, Director of Athletics Keith Davidson announced today. Assistant Coach Harold Fowler has been named the interim head coach.
Fowler will serve in that capacity until a replacement is found. He has been the assistant coach for the last two seasons and is a former player for the Hawks from 2004-08. He played anywhere between first and sixth singles and first and third doubles throughout his career. Fowler was a four-year starter and letterwinner for the Hawks.
Vickers, who was in his third year at UMES, submitted his letter of resignation to Davidson at the end of last week.
"I would like to thank Dylan for his dedication to UMES and the tennis program." said Davidson. "He took over this program when it was in need of some real guidance and oversight. Last season we showed real progress and I thought we were heading in the right direction. Hopefully we can get the program back on that path."
Vickers led the men's and women's teams to identical 6-33 records in his tenure, with 2009 being arguably the best season in recent program history. The Hawks team finished 6-9 while the Lady Hawks went 5-10.
UMES achieved its highest preseason ranking ever under Vickers, that coming at the beginning of the current season. The Hawks were picked to finish fifth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's Pre-season Poll.
Currently the UMES men are 1-8 and the women are 0-12 this season. Both are currently 0-2 in the MEAC North. Fowler oversaw the team this past weekend, where the men picked up their first win of the season.
