PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Head Coach Don Metil picked up his first win as a new coach at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) with a season opening win against his former school, Coppin State University (CSU) 3-0 (30-9, 30-13, 30-17). "The win had more of an emotional value than just a check in the win column," said Metil. Metil experimented with several lineups in tonight's match finding success with last season's All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) performer Holiday Eller (Minnetonka, Minn./St. Benilde-St. Margaret's H.S.) and last season's freshmen sensation Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica H.S.) who both notched seven kills apiece. Transfer Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md./University of Albany) wasn't far behind with six kills. The Eagles couldn't muster much offense as they tallied just 12 total kills as a team with Brittany Arvin, Danyel Davis and Indira Laurencin tallying three apiece. The Hawks recorded 58 total points off of Coppin State's mistakes as attack, service, reception and ball handling errors got the Eagles behind quickly in each game. Christina Estebane' (El Paso Texas, Midland College) recorded a whopping eight service aces to go along with two kills and 24 assists. Chanita Wesley (Minneapolis Minn./Breck H.S.) tallied a match high seven digs. While Adora Luster (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park H.S.) and Johnson had three block assists apiece. Laurencin had two solo blocks to lead all blockers. "I think it s a good place for us to start statistically for our upcoming swing of being on the road for more that a month," Metil added. "[Estabane'] did a great job running a fast offense and the girls are doing a good job buying into the offense. IT will be fin to watch as the season goes along." UMES hits the road for an entire month, playing 12 matches before returning to the Hytche Center on September 28 & 29 to host the Comfort Inn Classic. They meet Delaware State in a MEAC match on the first day at 4:00 pm.
