Aug. 31, 2007 RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Big East Conference power Seton Hall defeated the Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) 3-1 on the opening day of the Manhattan College Invitational, but it wasn't a cake walk for the Pirates. UMES played a hard fought match, representing the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) well, taking game two 30-23 while falling in games one, three and four (30-26, 30-18, 30-13). Whitney Johnson and Caylin Woodward led all attackers posting 13 kills each. Christina Estebane' tallied 36 assists to go with 16 digs, four kills and a service ace. Woodward and Leah Amundson also had double digit digs with 17 and 12 respectively. Seton Hall was led by Melissa Bellomy and Tricia Meyers who notched 12 kills each while Kristen Denboer had ten. UMES also got seven kills from Sam Chukwura and six from Adora Luster. As a team the Hawks tallied six blocks and 69 digs and hit .135 for the game. Seton Hall hit slightly better with .196 including a dominating game three with a .364 percentage. UMES' best game was the one they won, a .333 percentage in game two. The Hawks fall to 1-1 on the season while the Pirates pick up their second win to three losses (2-3). Both teams are back in action tomorrow with UMES playing at 10:00 am in their second match of the tournament.
