PEORIA, Ill. - The tournament host Braves of Bradley University bested the University of Maryland Eastern Shore 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-12) in the Hawks' second match of the CEFCU Classic on Saturday afternoon.

Ashley Smith (Huntley, Ill.) led the Hawks offense once again, hammering down eight kills on 30 swings. Classmate Diara Lewis (Columbia, S.C.) added seven kills on 27 swings. Senior Jingqiao Li (Beijing, China) covered the court on defense, digging out 16 balls while freshman Sonia Rosales (Victorville, Calif.) dished out 19 helpers while adding a pair of aces.

UMES played their best set in the second, tying the match several times, early. Down 3-1, Smith would take a Rosales set for the kill and earn the side-out. Allison Woods (Magnolia, Texas) would then serve a pair of aces to take a 4-3 lead. Woods then got help from Smith and Rosales for another kill to maintain serve and hold a 5-3 lead. Bradley then got a kill from Jessie Tulacka and capitalized on a pair of Hawk errors to take a 6-5 lead. UMES would tie it at six all with an Amy Angelos error.

The Hawks would hang around, but get no closer. After a UMES error and an ace from Bradley's Jessca Teel, the Hawks would call a timeout, down 14-9. Coming back from the timeout Teel tossed another ace but on the next serve Smith would pound out another kill to make is 15-10.

Lauren Berry would pick up the kill later in the match to cut the lead to 20-16. But Madison Kamp got her own kill on the next serve to make it 21-16. Bradley would muff the serve to make it 21-17 but the Braves got the next four points to close out the match 25-17.

In the opening set the Hawks jumped out to the lead when Lewis slammed down the ball for the first kill of the match but Bradley regrouped and rattled off seven straight points, six coming off of Teel serves.

Lewis would end the run with another kill to make it 7-2 but a pair of Kristi Chynoweth kills pushed the lead back to seven (9-2). UMES would slowly cut the lead to four on a Rosales ace that would make it 20-16. But just as quick Bradley rattled off the next five, four again on Teel serves, to take the set.

The third set saw the Hawks get down 3-0 but come back with two straight kills by Moriah Brookins (Cypress, Calif.) and Lewis. They would get no closer and fall by a final of 25-12.

Bradley was led by Any Angelos with 13 kills and Chynoweth with 10. Lauren Zerante was a main factor to the ineffectiveness of UMES' offense, collecting 22 digs on defense. Teel served up a pair of aces and added 13 assists.

UMES looks to close out the classic on a positive note when they take on Western Illinois in the night match on Saturday.
