Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's volleyball team posted a 3-1 (30-24, 25-30, 30-22, 31-29) victory over the Wright State on the first day of competition at the Georgetown Classic Volleyball Tournament. Sophomore middle blocker Annie Connor (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis) and senior outside hitter Ashley Lancaster (Huntsville, Ala./Huntsville) put up the Hoyas' top numbers offensively with 13 and 11 kills, respectively.

Sara Poling led the Raiders with a match-high 19 kills. The sophomore outside hitter also tallied eight digs, two blocks and an ace.

In addition to Connor's team-high 13 kills, she also registered a .357 hitting percentage, five blocks and two digs, while Lancaster added six digs, three blocks and an ace to her 11 kills. Senior middle blocker Sara Albert (Davis, Calif./Davis) stepped up with a match and season high nine block assists. Albert also posted eight kills, six digs and two assists on the evening.

Freshman Kate Fisher (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo Park) and senior Margaret Vernon (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) shared setting duties over the four games, with Fisher dishing out a team-high 24 assists and Vernon 19. Fisher also had six digs, two aces and a kill, while Vernon chipped in a match-high three aces in addition to nine digs.

Junior outside hitter Rachel Nelson (Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis) was credited with a team-high 10 digs. She also tallied eight kills, four blocks, two aces and an assist. Junior transfer Jenny Weed (Salt Lake City, Utah/Utah Valley State) ended the night with seven kills, four blocks and three digs. Sophomore middle blocker Jessica George (Kennet Square, Pa./Kennet) contributed four kills, three blocks and three assists. Freshman Patty Carroll (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South), playing the libero position, donated four digs in the winning effort.

Georgetown hit .176 for the match, while Wright State posted .116. The Hoyas outblocked the Raiders 15-6.

In the first match of the tournament, George Mason defeated Maryland -Eastern Shore 3-1 (30-26, 19-30, 30-24, 30-8). Junior Niki Bernardes led the Patriots with 13 kills, while junior Zulma Rojas led the Mason defensive effort with 15 digs. Senior Jana Milin was the top producer for the Hawks with a match-high 14 kills and 16 digs.

 

 

The Georgetown Classic will continue tomorrow, Saturday, September 11, at McDonough Gym. The first match of the day will be Wright State vs. George Mason at 11:00 a.m., followed by Georgetown vs. Maryland - Eastern Shore at 2:00 p.m. Wright State will then take on Maryland - Eastern Shore at 5:00 p.m., and Georgetown will close out the tournament with a 7:00 p.m. match against George Mason.
