ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Freshman Kaveingna Lea'Aetoa (Salt Lake City, Utah) had a game-high 10 kills and hit .350 to lead the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-16) victory over Howard in the opening match of the Kristin Dickmann Memorial Tournament at Navy's Wesley A. Brown Field House.

The win for UMES (4-7), is its third consecutive and second in a row in straight sets. Howard fell to 1-11 with the loss.

"We played very well on defense today and engaged our middle blockers in transition," sad UMES head coach Don Metil. " I am pleased with our total team effort and execution of our game plan.

Freshman Maline Vaitai (Salt Lake City, Utah) chipped in with eight kills and redshirt senior Samantha Chukwura (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied six with a .462 attack percentage.

The Hawks opened up a tight first game with a run of six straight points on junior Zoe Bowens (Long Beach, Calif.) serve to grab a 12-6 advantage and didn't look back. Howard responded to cut the lead to 16-10 and called a timeout.

UMES was able to close out the game with a 9-3 stretch to take a 1-0 lead heading into the second set.

UMES held the Bison to a -.083 hitting percentage in the opening game on four kills and six errors in 24 attacks while hitting .130 (9-6-23) itself.

The second set was closer and had seven ties and four lead changes. UMES was the beneficiary of three straight errors for a 19-16 advantage and cruised to a seven-point win.

UMES didn't miss a beat in the third set with just three errors and 11 kills in 26 attacks for a .308 percentage. For the match, the Hawks outhit the Bison .198 to -.024.

Sophomore Stephanie Sierra (El Paso, Texas) directed the offense with 18 assists and junior Rebecca Prado (Annandale, N.J.) recorded 10 of the team's 30 digs.

 

 

Howard received a team-high eight kills from Tosin Elebute in the loss.

The Hawks again held Howard to a negative hitting percentage (-.033) with just six kills and seven errors.

Tournament play concludes Saturday. UMES faces Hartford at 10 a.m. and Navy at 4 p.m. at Wesley Brown Field House.
