FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) have now won seven matches in a row after topping St. Francis (NY) 3-0 and the host Pioneers of Sacred Heart University (3-1) to win the 2007 Sacred Heart Invitational. The Maroon and Grey quickly disposed of St. Francis (NY) 3-0 (30-21, 30-11, 30-13) in the morning match and then took out the Pioneers at noon 3-1 (28-30, 30-21, 30-17, 30-21). In doing so UMES won the championship of the tournament and improved their record to 9-3, including a winning streak of seven. St. Francis (NY) fell to 0-15 while Sacred Heart went to 3-9. In the opening match UMES got 18 kills from Whitney Johnson and 13 from Holiday Eller, both in limited action. Johnson hit an amazing .455 in the match, committing just three errors on 33 swings. Also hitting well was Samantha Chukwura who tallied nine kills and hit .412 on 17 attempts. Caylin Woodward had 12 digs, the only Hawk in double digits in digs and notched five kills. UMES had another solid hitting match, swinging away at a .393 clip while St. Francis managed just above negative with .039. They had two players with five kills each. In the afternoon match the Hawks were stunned by the host Pioneers 28-30 but quickly regrouped to win three straight and secure the win and the title. Who else but Johnson would lead the way, tallying 23 kills on 41 swings and hitting a solid .488. She would add ten digs and three aces to post a double double. Eller had another good match posting 14 kills, hitting .355. Chukwura swung just 13 times, but notched seven kills, good for a .462 mark. All of that good hitting equaled a team percentage of .314 Christina Estebane had 45 assists, 13 digs, five kills and three aces in the win. Leah Amundson dug 16 balls of her own. UMES had 14 team blocks defensively as the Pioneers could not hit through, over or around the Hawk block. Their season high came yesterday when Providence had the same problem as UMES tallied 16.
Sacred Heart was led by Annie Archer with 17 kills and Christine Duffy with nine. UMES is back in action Tuesday night for their second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match of the year as they travel to Baltimore to face Coppin State University. The Hawks topped the Eagles 3-0 in their opening match of the season. |
