BALTIMORE, Md. - Whitney Johnson and Caylin Woodward combined for 35 kills leading Maryland Eastern Shore to a 30-20, 30-21, 30-16 victory over Coppin State in the Eagles Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener in the Coppin Center on Tuesday.

Johnson had 19 kills and Woodward added 16 for UMES. Woodward also had seven digs, five assists, two service aces and hit .696 for the match.

The Hawks won their eighth-straight match and improved to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the MEAC, while Coppin State fell to 1-12 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

In match where every Hawk saw time on the court, Holiday Eller added seven kills and three aces while Christina Estebane added 39 asists, five digs, two aces and three kills.

Brittany Arvin and Indira Laurencin combined for 22 kills to lead the CSU offense. Arvin led the team with 12, while Laurencin added 10 kills. Laurencin also had a match-high 11 digs. Lauren Lacey had 18 assists and seven digs for the Eagles.

Maryland Eastern Shore used several big runs to post a 30-20 victory in the first game. Johnson had two kills during a 8-2 UMES run that gave the Hawks a 13-6 lead.

The Eagles fought their way back into the match as Laurencin and Danyel Davis each posted kills to cut the lead to 20-16. UMES closed out the game on a 10-4 run behind the serving of Johnson and Adora Luster.

Johnson had three quick kills in game two as the Hawks jumped out to a 6-0 lead. A UMES attack error followed by a service error led to CSU trimming the margin to 12-6, but the Hawks answered with a 8-1 run to take a 20-7 lead.

UMES held a 26-11 lead before Coppin State mounted a comeback. Behind the serving of Kanishia Sheppard and four kills from Arvin, the Eagles climbed to within 28-20. UMES used a service error and a kill by Woodward to clinch the win.

 

 

UMES broke open a tight third game to finish off the Eagles. The Hawks used a 13-2 run to break an 11-11 deadlock and take a 24-13 lead. UMES had two service aces and Johnson ended the match with a kill for a 30-16 win.
