Baltimore, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) fell tonight in volleyball action on the campus of Morgan State University. The Hawks (7-9, 2-1 MEAC) fell to the Bears (9-12, 2-0 MEAC) 3-0 by scores of 31-29, 30-24, 30-22.

The two rivals went head to head in the first match until the Hawks took a 29-27 lead but two big Bear blocks tied the match at 29 and Morgan then pulled ahead for the win. The momentum carried over for the Lady Bears as Morgan took games two and three and shut out the Hawks.

Both teams had entered the night undefeated in MEAC play and the win could prove big in the MEAC North standings.

A MEAC Player of the Week, Mamie Lewis (Tallahassee, Fla./Indian River C.C.) added eight kills for the Hawks while Aja Smith (Tampa, Fla./Indian River C.C.) and Eriel Jeffery (Highland, Calif./Redlands East Valley H.S.) added seven each. The current MEAC Rookie of the Week, Kate Smith (Carpentersville, Ill./Dundee Crown H.S.) added 21 kills and seven digs. Senior Marlee Johnson (Ontario, Canada/Newmarket H.S.) racked up nine digs in the loss.

There is no rest for the weary as the Hawks return to action tomorrow in the UMES Hawk Volleyball Challenge. The tournament features former Hawk Head Coach Toby Rens as he brings his new squad, the Long Island Blackbirds, into Princess Anne. Former UMES Assistant Coach, Renee Arnold also brings her new team, the Hornets of Delaware State, to the tournament. UMES opens play at 1:00 against Niagara and then takes the court again at 5:00 versus UNC-Asheville.
