PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's volleyball team downed Delaware State 3-2 (30-22, 30-27, 32-34, 24-30, 14-16) to pick up its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win of the season on Friday afternoon. UMES (3-13, 1-3 MEAC) showed aggression early in the match as they went up by several points in Game One, but Delaware St. fought back to tie the game. The Lady Hawks proved to be too much for the Lady Hornets eventually winning Game One, 30-22. Delaware St. rallied and got off to a hot start in Game Two, opening up with a 6-2 run. UMES pulled within two points and eventually tied the game at 15, but the Hornets narrowly pulled out the victory, 30-27. UMES and Delaware St. (2-12, 1-1 MEAC) exchanged points in a hard fought third game, but the Lady Hawks eventually downed the Lady Hornets 34-32. After a 9-6 deficit, UMES put away seven straight points and never looked back, eventually winning Game Four, 30-24, to send the match to a deciding Game Five. Delaware St. gained momentum in Game Five but the Lady Hawks fought back, going up by one point, 8-7, before the teams switched sides. From there both teams exchanged points but UMES pulled out the 16-14 victory in the deciding game. The Lady Hawks had three players finish with double-digit kills led by junior Melanie Durimel with 17 and freshman Holiday Eller with 16. Likica Grceva had a team high 26 digs, while Yael Rozner chipped in with a double-double of 44 assists and 16 digs. Lauren Huculak led the way for the Lady Hornets with 16 kills. UMES will battle Manhattan College in the second match of the Challenge, facing off with the Lady Jaspers in a 7 p.m. contest Friday night.
