PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team defeated Delaware State University (DSU), 3-1, to pick up their first conference win of the season. The Lady Hawks also extended their home winning streak to 31 matches. UMES improves to 2-11 overall (1-0 MEAC) while the Hornets drop to 1-10 overall (0-1 MEAC).

In the first set, DSU took a timeout after trailing 13-9 to the Lady Hawks. After the timeout, the Lady Hawks would extend the lead with three consecutive points, 16-9. The Hornets would take another timeout to stop the Lady Hawks run, 21-16. The team would eventually take the first set, 25-20.

In the second set, DSU jumped out to an early 6-3 lead before the Lady Hawks would call a timeout. UMES would cut into the lead, 9-8, to force the Hornets in calling a timeout. After the timeout, DSU would score the next 16 out of 25 points to take the second set, 25-17.

In the third set, the Lady Hawks would regain the momentum. DSU would try to stop the momentum after trailing 8-3, but the Lady Hawks would score the next 17 out of 25 points to take the third set, 25-11.

In the fourth set, the Hornets would take a timeout after trailing 9-8. The Lady Hawks would score 10 out of the next 15 points before DSU called another timeout, 19-13. UMES would wrap-up the match by scoring six out of eight points to end the match, 25-15.

Ashley Smith (Huntley, IL) had 12 kills followed by Lauren Berry's (Bloomington, IL) 11 kills. Moriah Brookins (Cypress, CA) and Haley Robinson (Honolulu, HI) each had 10 kills. Sonia Rosales (Victorville, CA) had a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs. Senior Jingqiao (Beijing, China) led the team in digs (23) followed by Allison Woods (Magnolia, TX) with 14 digs.

Next Friday (10/04), the Lady Hawks will play Howard University and look to extend their home-match winning streak. Start time is 7:00pm.
