LADY HAWKS STUMBLED ON THE ROAD TO EAGLES

Baltimore, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) stumbled on their first road conference match of the season against Coppin State, 3-0. The loss drops the Lady Hawks 2-13 overall (1-2 MEAC) while the Eagles improved to 5-13 overall (2-2 MEAC).
Freshman Sonia Rosales (Victorville, CA) had another strong outing, posting her third consecutive 30 + assist performance (34). Ashley Smith (Huntley, IL) led the Lady Hawks in kills with nine followed by Haley Robinson's (Honolulu, HI) eight kills. Senior Jingqiao Li (Beijing, China) tallied 15 digs while Rosales and Diara Lewis (Columbia, SC) each posted seven digs.
In the first set, the Eagles scored the first three points of the match until back-to-back kills by Smith and Aleksandra Manolova (Sofia, Bulgaria) stopped the Eagles momentarily. Coppin State would score the next six points to take a 9-2 lead. The team would battle, but the deficit in the first set was too great to overcome. The Lady Hawks would drop the first set, 25-13.
In the second set, Coppin State would score the first two points in the set until Lauren Berry's (Bloomington, IL) kill and Allison Woods' (Magnolia, TX) ace would tie the set, 2-2. Both teams would nearly go back-and-forth with points throughout the second set. The Lady Hawks would take a timeout, trailing 14-13. After the timeout, Robinson would score a point for the team to tie set, 14-14. UMES would take their second timeout of the set, trailing 21-20. After the brief intermission, the Lady Hawks would tie the set on Lewis' kill, making the score 21-21. The Eagles would take the next four out of six points to escape and win the set, 25-23, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, UMES would trail 2-0 until Smith's kill would put the team on the board. Coach Millicent Van Norden would take an early timeout in the set to slow down the Eagles, after trailing 6-2. After the timeout, the Lady Hawks would score the next two points on errors to cut into the Eagles' lead, 6-4. Both teams would make runs, swinging the momentum back-and-forth. UMES would call their second timeout of the set, trailing 18-15. After the short break, the Lady Hawks would score the next five out of seven points to tie the set, 20-20. Coppin State would be force to call their first timeout of the set. After the Eagles' timeout, the Lady Hawks would take their first lead in the set on an Eagles' error, 21-20. Coppin State would score the next two points to reclaim the lead (22-21), but another Eagles' error would tie the set again, 22-22. UMES would continue to fight, but Coppin State would score the last three points in the set and match, 25-22.
Other notable Hawk performances included Manolova posting four kills along with three digs while Berry tallied seven kills, two digs, and two blocks. Woods added four digs and one ace.
For Coppin State, Nicole Malave had a double-double (14 kills and 12 digs). Chelsee Sauni had a match-high 38 assists while Gabrielle Otero led the Eagles with 17 digs. Cindy Okpegbue added 13 kills in the win.
Next weekend, the Lady Hawks continue their road trip back to Baltimore, MD where they will face Morgan State. Match time is 7:00 p.m. Next, the team heads down south to Hampton, VA to battle the Lady Pirates of Hampton University. Match time is 3:00 p.m.
