PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team lost both of their matches on day two of the MEAC Round-Up held at the W.P. Hytche Center. The Lady Hawks lost to South Carolina State (SCSU) 3-2 (22-30, 35-33, 30-26, 28-30, 16-14) in Saturday's opening match and dropped their second contest to North Carolina A&T (NCAT) 3-0 (30-27, 30-26, 30-21).

Freshman Yael Rozner (Haifa, Israel) had her second triple-double of the season as she finished with 12 kills, 50 assists and 14 digs. Holiday Eller (Minnetonka, Minn.) added 15 kills and 21 digs, while libero Stephanie Braxton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) had a match high 23 digs. Freshmen Chanita Wesley (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Adora Luster (Woodbridge, Va.) each added double-digit kills as they finished with 13 and 11, respectively.

Monique Walker had a double-doubles of 16 kills and 10 digs to lead the Lady Bulldogs, while Jasmine Bland added a double-double of 10 kills and 17 digs.

The Lady Hawks took the first game from South Carolina State 30-22 but dropped the second 35-33. The next three games came right down to the wire as SCSU grinded out the 30-26 game three victory. UMES took the fourth game 30-28 but could not hold on in the fifth as they fell to the Bulldogs 16-14.

The Lady Hawks ran off a 9-2 run in game one of the second match against the Aggies. But NCAT responded with a run of their own to gain the 21-18 advantage, forcing a UMES timeout and then closing out the game 30-27.

 

 

Game two was a close decision with both teams trading points to knot things up at 26. However the Aggie service game proved to be too much for the maroon and gray, as Krystal Cooper served up four consecutive service aces to end the game, giving NCAT the 30-26 game two victory.

The third game began with both teams exchanging points until the Aggies went on a 9-1 stretch to take an eight point lead at 22-14. UMES fought off a 6-2 NCAT rally in the final stretch but could not hold on to the win as the Aggies took the game 30-21.

Rozner fell two kills shy of another triple-double as she finished with eight kills, 27 assists and 11 digs. Eller and Eriel Jeffery (Highland, Calif.) each finished with nine kills to lead the Lady Hawks, while Darlene Mitchell had a game high 17 kills for NCAT.

UMES closes out the MEAC Round-Up on Sunday with two matches. The Lady Hawks face Norfolk State at 11 a.m. and do battle with Bethune-Cookman at 3 p.m.
