PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The UMES women's volleyball team split a pair of matches to Norfolk State and Bethune-Cookman on the final day of the MEAC Round-Up. The Lady Hawks picked up a victory over the Spartans 3-0 (30-20, 30-16, 30-20) but fell in a close contest to the Wildcats 3-2 (30-19, 28-30, 30-22, 23-30, 13-15). Senior Eriel Jeffery (Highland, Calif.) led the way for UMES in the decision versus Norfolk as she finished with a match high 11 kills. Adora Luster (Woodbridge, Va.) added nine kills while Chanita Wesley (Minneapolis, Minn.) had a match high 12 digs on the defensive end. The Spartans got six kills each from Chanel Barnes and Karina Moore. Shea Kersey added 10 digs. In their second decision of the day, the Lady Hawks let a one game lead slip away as Bethune-Cookman defeated the maroon and gray in five games. UMES falls to 5-21 (2-8 MEAC) despite double-digit kills from Jeffery (16) and Wesley (12). Yael Rozner (Haifa, Israel) added a double-double of 43 assists and 13 digs, while Stephanie Braxton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) had 20 defensive digs, tying the match high. The Lady Hawks are off for 10 days and face Hampton in their next decision on Oct. 25 in a 7 p.m. home matchup.
