UMES TAKES DELAWARE STATE IN STRAIGHT SETS, 3-0
Oct. 24, 2008
DOVER, Del. - The last time the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's volleyball team was in Dover, Del. facing Delaware State University (DSU), the match was pushed to five sets before UMES captured the win. This time, however, the Lady Hawks overcame a tight third set to defeat DSU 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-22).
"We came in again today concerned about Delaware State and it was good that our passing was very consistent," said Head Coach Don Metil. "It allowed us to run things to really spread out our offense."
Christina Estebané (El Paso, Texas) continues to be outstanding, posting a game-high 40 assists with five digs and two service aces. Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md.) was in true Player of the Year form, knocking down a game-high 15 kills with just two errors. Leah Amundson (Tucson, Ariz.) finished with a team-high nine digs.
DSU (10-10) came close to being the first conference team to take a set from UMES (20-8) when they tied the third set three times in the final eight points of the match. After a kill by DSU's Sarah Wheatcroft put the Hornets within one, 21-22, Thonya Joseph (Bridgetown, Barbados) responded with a kill and UMES pushed a 3-1 run to end the match.
Erica Tajchman led the Hornets with nine kills and a game-high 11 digs. Martina Ferrari finished with a team-high 29 assists.
The Lady Hawks head back home on Sunday, October 26 for their Senior Night against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rival Hampton University (5-24). You can watch UMES honor their four seniors live at umeshawks.com.
