Oct. 25, 2013
WASHINGTON, DC. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team concluded their six-match road trip in a loss to Howard University, 3-0. The Lady Hawks played their final road match of the season as they fell to 3-17 overall (2-6 MEAC) while the Lady Bison improved to 17-8 overall (5-2 MEAC).
For the second straight match, Diara Lewis (Columbia, SC) led the Hawk attack with seven kills. Freshman Precious Manu (Carson, CA) added nine assists, which was a team-high, while Senior Jingqiao Li (Beijing, China) led the team in digs (15).
In the first set, UMES would score the first point of the match on a Lady Bison error; however, both teams would be tied after the next 13 points, 7-7. Howard would create separation after scoring the following nine out of 15 points, taking a 16-13 lead. Coach Millicent Van Norden would call the first timeout of the match. After the brief intermission, the Lady Bison's momentum would continue by scoring the next four points, 20-13. The Lady Hawks would rally late, but the deficit was too great to overcome. UMES would fall, 25-20, and trail Howard, 1-0, in the match.
In set number two, the Lady Hawks would take an early 3-1 lead on Howard's errors, but the Lady Bison would recover to score the following nine out of 13 points, 10-7. Howard's run would continue by scoring the next three points, 13-7, until back-to-back kills by Lewis and Ashley Smith (Huntley, IL) would stop the run, 13-9. Despite UMES' mini-run, the Lady Bison would regain control by scoring the next four points, 17-9. UMES would continue to battle, but again, Howard's lead was too great as UMES would fall, 25-15. As a result, Howard would take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
After a 10-minute intermission between sets two and three, the Lady Hawks would respond and both teams would be deadlocked, 3-3, early. The Lady Bison would go on another run by scoring the next six out of eight points to take an early 9-5 lead. Coach Van Norden would request a timeout to regroup her young team. After a brief rest, UMES responded by scoring a point on a kill by Haley Robinson (Honolulu, HI), cutting Howard's lead down to three, 9-6. Thereafter, the Lady Bison would withstand UMES' rally by outscoring the Lady Hawks 9-6, taking a commanding 18-12 lead midway through the third set. UMES would ask for another timeout to attempt to slow down the momentum, but it was too late. Howard would finish the match by scoring the following seven out of 13 points to win the set, 25-18. Therefore, the Lady Bison would sweep the Lady Hawks, 3-0.
Other notable Hawk performances included Smith posting five kills and a dig while Robinson added three kills and an assist. Li and Sonia Rosales (Victorville, CA) each tallied six assists in the loss.
For the Lady Bison, Assata Conway led Howard in kills (9) whereas Stephanie Shultis paced the team by recording 22 assists. Allyson Lods was the top digger for the Lady Bison with 12 digs in the victory.
The Lady Hawks return home Oct. 31st to face Morgan State University. The match begins a four-match home stand to end the 2013 regular season. Match time is 7:00 p.m.
