MORGAN STATE SPOILS LADY HAWKS RETURN HOME

Princess Anne, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team fell to Morgan State University in four sets, 3-1, after returning home from a six-match road trip. With the loss, the Lady Hawks dropped to 3-18 overall (2-7 MEAC) whereas the Lady Bears improved to 11-12 overall (6-4 MEAC).
Haley Robinson (Honolulu, HI) and Diara Lewis (Columbia, SC) each recorded double-digit kills. Robinson posted 12 kills, three blocks (one solo), and led the team in hitting percentage (.216). Lewis registered 11 kills, five digs, and a service ace. Freshman Sonia Rosales (Victorville, CA) returned to form as she posted her seventh 30+ assist performance this season (35). Lone senior Jingqiao Li (Beijing, China) set a new career-high as she tallied 39 digs, nearly averaging 10 digs per set. In her efforts, Li is the last UMES player to record a 30+ dig performance since Leah Amundson back in 2007 (32).
In the first set, Precious Manu (Carson, CA) began the match with a service ace to put the Lady Hawks on the board first, 1-0. Afterwards, both clubs with go on runs, but neither teams’ lead with eclipse three points. Midway through the set, both teams would be tied, 17-17, until a service ace by Lauren Berry (Bloomington, IL) and an attack error by the Lady Bears would put UMES ahead, 19-17. Morgan State would be forced to call the first timeout of the match. After the timeout, the Lady Bears would score the next two points, 19-19, but the Lady Hawks would respond by scoring the following two points on an error by Morgan State and a kill by Aleksandra Manolova (Sofia, Bulgaria) to reclaim the lead, 21-19. The Lady Bears would eventually call another timeout after trailing, 23-20. After the short rest, Morgan State would make a run and cut into UMES’ lead, 24-23, forcing Coach Millicent Van Norden to use a timeout. After the brief intermission, an attack error by the Lady Hawks would give Morgan State a point and tie the set, 24-24. Both teams would exchange the next two points and remain tied, 25-25, but the Lady Hawks would not be denied. Lewis’ kill and an error by the Lady Bears would give UMES the win, 27-25, and lead the match, 1-0.
In set number two, UMES would trail early, 3-1, but regain momentum. The Lady Hawks would tie the set, 3-3, after Robinson’s kill and an attack error by Morgan State. The Lady Bears would battle back and re-take the early lead, but UMES would not back down. After the first 18 points, both teams were deadlocked, 9-9, until Rosales’ kill and Lewis’ service ace would give the Lady Hawks their first lead in the set, 11-9. Morgan State would rally to tie the set, 12-12, and both clubs would continue their mini-runs until the Lady Bears would create some separation, 20-17. UMES would call a timeout to slow down Morgan State’s momentum, but it was too late. The Lady Bears would end the set on a 5-2 run to win, 25-20, and tie the match, 1-1.
After the ten-minute intermission between sets two and three, both teams would be tied, 9-9, after a point on Robinson’s kill. Next, Morgan State would score the following four points, 13-9, forcing the Lady Hawks to call a timeout. After the timeout, the Lady Bears scored another point to extend their lead, 14-10. UMES would continue to fight, but Morgan State’s deficit was too great to overcome as the Lady Hawks would fall in the third set, 25-19. The Lady Bears would take the lead in the match, 2-1.
In the fourth set, the Lady Bears jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, forcing Coach Van Norden to ask for a timeout. After the short timeout, Morgan State would extend the lead, 4-0, but the Lady Hawks would get on the board and score the next three points, 4-3, including a Lady Bear error, Manu’s service ace, and kill by Moriah Brookins (Cypress, CA). After this point, Morgan State would take control of the match. The Lady Bears would score the following six out of nine points and take a 10-6 lead. Next, Morgan State scored the following four points, 14-6, until Berry’s kill would slow down the run. The Lady Bears scored six out of the next 10 points, 20-10. After that, the Lady Hawks would score three more points before Morgan State clinched the set, 25-13, and match, 3-1.
Other notable Hawk performances included Manu posting a match-high three service aces along with three digs. Berry recorded six kills, two blocks (one solo), and a service ace. Manolova tallied five kills, eight digs, and two blocks while Brookins finished the match with three kills and a dig.
For Morgan State, three Lady Bears registered double-digit kills, led by Samantha Prescott (16). Prescott also had 10 digs, which was second-best on team. Ngebui Chafeh posted a match-high 45 assists while Arianna Hayden recorded a team-high 34 digs in the win.
On Sunday, Nov. 3rd, the Lady Hawks continue their home-stand versus Coppin State University. Match time is 3:00 p.m.
