PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- The Hawks defeated their in-state rival Coppin State in three sets (25-19, 25-21, 25-21) at home for their 10th straight conference win, improving to 19-6 overall. Coppin State falls to 1-10 in the MEAC and 5-22 overall.

With the victory, UMES has won 22-straight matches at home and 14 in a row this season.

A pair of early 3-0 runs gave UMES an early 8-4 advantage in the first game. After Coppin State got a 3-0 run, the Hawks took five of next six points, with a kill and block by Maline Vaitai (Salt Lake City, Utah) for a 13-8 lead. At 15-12 Hawks, UMES once again took five of six powered by three Saitaua Iosia (Long Beach, Calif.) kills to go up 20-13. UMES won set one 25-19, with Victoria Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) hitting a perfect 5-for-5 in the game.

Coppin State got out to an early 5-1 lead in set two. Later at 6-2 Lady Eagles, two blocks and a kill from Iosia led UMES to take six of seven points to go up 8-7. Both sides exchanged points when at 13-13, UMES took four in a row, including a kill and block from Ndidi Ibe (North Richland, Texas). From there the Hawks did not relinquish the lead and won 25-21 for a two-set lead in the match.

Game three saw the Lady Eagles take an early lead again at 10-5 Coppin State. UMES got to within one with five points out of six attempts at 11-10. Later a 3-0 run by UMES capped by a Zoe Bowens (Long Beach, Calif.) kill tied the score at 14. The teams went back and forth as Coppin State got an 18-17 advantage. Off the serving of Jessie Vicic (Cambridge, Ontario, Canada), the Hawks surged ahead with five straight points, three coming from Iosia kills, for a 22-19 lead. UMES took set three 25-21 to win in shut out fashion.

 

 

As a team, UMES hit .404 with 48 kills and 10 errors on 94 total attacks. Vaitai got her third double-double of the season with 11 kills and digs plus a pair of blocks. Iosia hit .571 with 18 kills and just two errors, adding seven digs and three blocks. Ibe got a season-high seven blocks with nine kills to hit .533 while Williams finished with a perfect 1.000 hitting with six kills in as many attempts along with two blocks.

Ariel Richard led the Lady Eagles with 12 kills, also getting two aces. Vanity Massey got six kills and digs, while libero Gabrielle Otero led all players with 16 digs.

UMES will play Norfolk State in the Hytche Athletic Center on Friday, November 11th at 7:00 p.m.
