Princess Anne, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team ended the 2013 season with a loss to Hampton University, 3-0. With the loss, the Lady Hawks finished the season with a 3-21 record (2-10 MEAC) whereas the Lady Pirates improved to 16-10 (10-2 MEAC). Also, the match saw lone senior Jingqiao Li (Beijing, China) compete in her final home match.

Freshman Haley Robinson (Honolulu, HI) led the Hawk attack with nine kills. Fellow freshman Sonia Rosales (Victorville, CA) recorded 18 assists while Li posted 20 digs, the seventh 20+ dig performance in her career.

In the first set, Hampton jumped out to an early 3-0 lead to start the match. UMES volleyball head coach Millicent Van Norden requested a quick timeout to slow down the Lady Pirates’ momentum. After the brief intermission, the Lady Hawks would get on the board after a service error by Hampton, 3-1, but the Lady Pirates’ run continued. Next, Hampton scored the following six points to take a commanding lead, 9-1, until back-to-back Lady Pirate errors would trim the lead down to six, 9-3. Then, Hampton would go on another run by scoring four points in a row, 13-3. Afterwards, the Lady Pirates outscored UMES, 12-10, to take the first set, 25-13.

In set number two, the Lady Hawks scored the first two points, 2-0, including a Hampton error and service ace by Precious Manu (Carson, CA). Then, the Lady Pirates would regain control by scoring the next seven out of nine points, 7-4, forcing UMES to call a timeout. After the short rest, the Lady Hawks narrowed the gap to one, 7-6, after another Hampton error and a Robinson kill. Next, the Lady Pirates scored the following five points to extend the lead, 12-6. Later, Hampton would take a 20-12 lead after scoring eight out of the following 14 points. The Lady Pirates closed out on a 5-3 run to take the set, 25-15, and lead the match, 2-0.


 

 

In the third set, UMES scored the first point on a kill by Diara Lewis (Columbia, SC), 1-0. Then, both teams would exchange the next 14 points and Hampton took an 8-7 lead before Coach Van Norden called a timeout to regroup her squad. After the Lady Hawks’ timeout, a Lady Pirates’ service error tied the set, 8-8. Next, UMES took a12-9 lead, including a service ace by Ashley Smith (Huntley, IL) and a kill by Allison Woods (Magnolia, TX). Hampton battled back to tie, 15-15, but back-to-back Lady Pirate errors would give UMES the lead again, 17-15. Hampton would call their first timeout of the match. After the Lady Pirates’ timeout, Hampton scored two consecutive points to tie, 17-17, but UMES regained the lead after Robinson’s kill, 18-17. Again, the Lady Pirates eventually tied the set, 18-18, forcing the Lady Hawks to call a timeout. After the short intermission, both teams exchanged the following four points and were tied, 20-20. Afterwards, Hampton created separation by scoring the next three points and ended the match scoring five out of last six points, 25-21. The Lady Pirates won the set and match, 3-0.

Other notable Hawk performances included Manu and Lewis registering three digs each. Smith tallied four digs, a kill, and a service ace while Woods recorded five digs, three kills, and a service ace.

For the Lady Pirates, Vendula Strakova had a match-high 17 kills while Bibiany Fonseca added 34 assists. Both, Strakova and Fonseca, posted a team-high nine digs in the victory.

Sunday’s match ends the 2013 UMES volleyball season. Additionally, Li ended her collegiate career playing in 371 sets (108 matches) with 951 digs, 82 assists, eight kills, and seven aces.
