WASHINGTON D.C.- The UMES volleyball team concluded their season Friday night with a 3-1 loss to the George Washington (GW) Colonials at the Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. The Colonials won by the scores of 30-15, 30-13, 22-30, and 30-14.

UMES (5-28) was led by Eriel Jeffery's (Highland, Calif.) 10 kills and Stephanie Braxton's (Upper Marlboro, Md.) 16 digs. Freshmen Chanita Wesley (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Maja Baltic (Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro) added seven kills each.

GW junior Juliene McLaughlin led all players with 16 kills and hit .353 with nine digs while Lindsey Vernand added 11 kills.

After the Colonials breezed to victories in the first two games, it was the Hawks who came out strong in game three and built a 15-10 lead. GW closed to within 16-14 before another run by the Hawks gave the maroon and gray a 21-15 lead on a service ace by freshman Yael Rozner (Haifa, Israel).

Following a GW timeout, UMES got kills from four different players to take a commanding 29-19 lead and won the game on a kill by Baltic.

Game four was all the Colonials as GW raced out to a 11-3 lead and took the game to seal the victory.

The match was the last for seniors Jeffery and Nicole Wilson (Bronx, N.Y.). The rest of the Hawks will continue their season next fall.
