GREENSBORO, NC - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team defeated the South Carolina State Bulldogs 3-0 (30-18, 30-24, 30-22) to advance to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) semifinals.

Senior Jana Milin (Pula, Croatia/University of Economy) led the Hawks, tallying 16 kills, 13 digs and six service aces in the victory. Milin, who was named to the 2004 All-MEAC First Team and narrowly missed Player of the Year honors by just three points, had help from Aja Smith (Tampa, Florida/Indian River CC), who had 11 digs to go along with three kills.

"Aja kept us in the game by digging", said UMES head coach Alex Temkin. "Her digs allowed Jana to come through which helped us finish the match strong."

Libero Marlee Johnson (Ontario, Canada/Newmarket) finished with 15 digs, while Mandie Dever (Fort Walton Beach, Florida/Pasco Hernando CC) chipped in with nine digs and seven kills. Freshman setter Kate Smith (Carptersville, Illinois/Dundee Crown) had 26 assists in the win.

South Carolina State (17-14, 4-7 MEAC) was led by Aubrey Posada's 13 digs and 11 assists. Stacey Stewart had seven kills and four digs, while Vicky Jeter, Kinshasha Hill and Lilliana Gootinag each finished with five kills. Gootinag also had 15 assists to go along with her five kills.

The win advances UMES (18-15, 9-2 MEAC) to the semifinal round later this evening, where they will face the winner of the Bethune Cookman/Morgan State quarterfinal match at 7:00pm.
