Nov. 19, 2004 GREENSBORO, NC - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team defeated South Carolina State and Morgan State in quarterfinal and semifinal action to advance to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship game on Saturday, November 20. The Hawks played both teams on Friday, November 19, first facing the Bulldogs of South Carolina State. Senior Jana Milin (Pula, Croatia/University of Economy) led UMES, tallying 16 kills, 13 digs and six service aces in the victory. Milin, who was named to the 2004 All-MEAC First Team and narrowly missed Player of the Year honors by just three points, had help from Aja Smith (Tampa, Florida/Indian River CC), who had 11 digs to go along with three kills. "Aja kept us in the game by digging", said Hawks head coach Alex Temkin. "Her digs allowed Jana to come through which helped us finish the match strong." Libero Marlee Johnson (Ontario, Canada/Newmarket) finished with 15 digs, while Mandie Dever (Fort Walton Beach, Florida/Pasco Hernando CC) chipped in with nine digs and seven kills. Freshman setter Kate Smith (Carpentersville, Illinois/Dundee Crown) had 26 assists in the win. South Carolina State (17-14, 4-7 MEAC) was led by Aubrey Posada's 13 digs and 11 assists. Stacey Stewart had seven kills and four digs, while Vicky Jeter, Kinshasha Hill and Lilliana Gootinag each finished with five kills. Gootinag also had 15 assists to go along with her five kills.
The win advanced UMES to the semifinal round against Morgan State in a 7:00pm match later on in the day. The Hawks went on to defeat the Bulldogs in five games, 27-30, 30-26, 29-31, 30-22 and 15-10.
Jana Milin, who finished with 31 kills, 19 digs and three service aces, once again led UMES. This is her sixth time netting at least 30 kills this season. Aja Smith added 12 kills and 25 digs, while Mandie Dever tallied 14 kills and 16 digs. Kate Smith had 27 assists and 16 digs in the victory. The Hawks had a well-rounded effort, with Nicole Wilson (Bronx, NY/Parkville) and Likica Grceva (Natick, MA/Natick) each stepping up and providing support off the bench. Wilson started the last three games in place of Mamie Lewis, who sprained her knee in the second game. Wilson finished with four solo blocks to go along with three kills. Grceva played in four games, tallying 12 digs and two service aces. UMES (19-15, 10-2 MEAC) moves on to face the Florida A&M Rattlers in the championship match on Saturday, November 20 at 12:00pm. |
