June 29, 2006 PRINCESS ANNE, MD - University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) head volleyball coach Alex Temkin has announced the signings of Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica) and Samantha Chukwura (Jamaica Estates, N.Y./Bayside) to play volleyball for the Lady Hawks in 2006-07. Woodward was captain of Pacifica's volleyball squad during her junior and senior years of high school. She capped her career in the fall by earning league MVP honors. The 6-0 right side also received All-Conference first team honors in 2004 and All-Conference second team honors as a sophomore in 2003. Woodward played four years of club volleyball with the nationally-recognized Mizuno Long Beach club team. The 5-7 Chukwura is a tremendous athlete that will play the middle for the maroon and gray. She was selected to the All-Queens team her senior year and led her squad to the Public School Athletic League (PSAL) playoffs for two consecutive seasons. The talented student-athlete also competed in track and field for the Commodores and placed sixth in the 2005 Queens Borough championships in the 100m dash. Tonaio Swangin, a 5-9 outside hitter from Suitland, Maryland who played tennis for UMES and Deborah Alston, a 6-0 middle blocker, will also join the Lady Hawks on the hardwood. The quartet joins a squad that lost just two letterwinners from last year's team. The maroon and gray opens their season on Aug. 25-26 with the inaugural Kick Off Classic at the Hytche Center.
