UMES VOLLEYBALL REVEALS 2014 SCHEDULE

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Today, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team revealed their 2014 schedule for the upcoming season. The squad will host 14 opponents, including two tournaments, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.
On August 29-30, UMES will host the UMES Invitational Tournament to open the season and play against Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU), South Dakota State University (SDSU), Weber State University, and the University of Maryland Baltimore-County (UMBC). Last season, the Retrievers finished runner-up in the American East Conference after losing in five-sets to the eventual champions, New Hampshire, in the championship match.
In September, the Hawks travel to Cedar City, Utah to compete in the Southern Utah Invitational, hosted by Southern Utah University (SUU). The four-team tournament will consist of UMES, SUU, Savannah State University (SSU), and the University of California-Riverside (UC-Riverside).
The following week (09/12-09/13), Maryland Eastern Shore goes down south to Tar Hill Country to take part in the UNC-Greensboro/NC A&T Tournament, a partnership tournament between the University of North Carolina-Greensboro (UNC-Greensboro) and North Carolina A&T State University (NCAT). The two-day event will be made of UMES, UNC-Greensboro, NCAT, and Alabama State University (ASU). A year ago, the Hornets won the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship.
On September 19-20, the team returns home to host their second tournament, the UMES Invite Tournament. The five-team tournament involves UMES, Bethune-Cookman University (BCU), Binghamton University, Campbell University, and Rider University.
Within a week (09/26), the squad wraps up the month against rt. 13 rival, Delaware State University (DSU), to open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play.
In October, Maryland Eastern Shore’s busy month begins with back-to-back trips to our Nation’s Capital, Washington, D.C. On October 1st, the Hawks will face 11-time Patriot League Champion, American University. Last season, the Eagles won the conference and advanced to the sweet sixteen in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament.
Two days later (10/03), UMES takes on Howard University (10/03) before returning to the Hytche Center to open a six-match home-stand against Coppin State University (CSU) on October 5th. The next five home-matches feature Morgan State University (10/10), Hampton University (10/12), Norfolk State University (10/17), DSU (10/19), and Howard (10/24).
On October 28th, the Hawks head to Greenville, N.C. to face the Pirates of East Carolina University (ECU) in a non-conference matchup before concluding the month in Baltimore against MEAC opponent Morgan State (10/31).
UMES starts November with three consecutive road trips, beginning at Coppin State (11/02). Five days later (11/07), the club goes to Norfolk, Va. to take on the Spartans, followed by a trip to Hampton, Va. to face the 2013 MEAC Champions, Hampton (11/09). On November 11th, Maryland Eastern Shore comes home to meet East Carolina in the regular-season finale.
