PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- COBRA Magazine has listed UMES sophomore outside hitter Saitaua Iosia as a Preseason Player of the Year candidate, announced by the publication in its September 2012 issue.

In addition, Iosia (Long Beach, Calif.) was named to the magazine's All-Preseason First Team, the only player from an HBCU to be either a Player of the Year candidate or First Team selection.

Last season, Iosia was the magazine's Freshman of the Year and made the All-National First Team. Teammate Maline Vaitai (Salt Lake City, Utah) earned a place on the All-National Honorable Mention team.

Iosia was voted as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year after earning the conference's Rookie of the Year honor, leading the league with 472 kills.

The other COBRA Magazine Preseason Player of the Year candidates include Haley Jo Eckerman of Texas, Altrese Hawkins of Memphis, Tyler Henderson of Tulsa, Deja McClendon of Penn State, Monique Mead of Georgia Tech, Lena Oliver of Western Michigan and Jordanne Scott of Cincinnati.

The online publication COBRA Magazine, in its mission statement, honors the success of volleyball players of African, Samoan and Tongan descent.

COBRA also publicized a future UMES volleyball contest as one of the "Top Pre-Conference Matches of 2012," when the Hawks face Southwestern Athletic Conference champion Jackson State at the ASU Tournament in Montgomery, Alabama on Saturday, September 15th at 3:00 p.m.
